Singapore River, 1979

Ong Kim Seng

Singapore River, 1979

watercolour on paper
52 x 72 cm

The unusually tight cropping of this scene gives an impression of a bustling metropolis that spills past the limits of its frame. Foliage from an unseen tree stretches into view from above, accentuating the illusion of beholding this view from the opposite river bank.

Though dwarfed by the surrounding skyscrapers that seemingly extend upward into infinity, the protagonist of this scene is the boatman in the midground. Here, Ong’s attention to detail comes through and viewers can see a towel draped over his singlet-clad chest, the very image of an industrious labourer. The oar he holds is angled in the same direction as his boat, attributing a sense of agency to this man who resolutely continues about his way of life in a changing world.
