I Made Wianta (1949–2020) was a pioneering Indonesian artist whose practice bridged the realms of modern and contemporary art. Born in Bali and educated in Yogyakarta, Wianta developed a visual language that fused Balinese cultural symbolism with modern abstraction and global artistic ideas. His work spans painting, calligraphy, installation, and performance, reflecting both intellectual depth and spiritual sensitivity.
This work belongs to the formative Karangasem period, a phase that laid the foundation for Wianta’s distinctive artistic identity. Named after a region in eastern Bali, Karangasem embodies the island’s deep spiritual atmosphere rooted in the concept of Niskala, or the unseen realm. Channeling this invisible energy, Wianta drew upon his subconscious as a source of creation. The resulting works evoke a surrealist sensibility, where abstract forms and dreamlike compositions subtly echo the visual language and symbolism of Balinese culture.
