Hong Sek Chern: Cities Remembered
Singaporean artist Hong Sek Chern is recognised for her intricate mixed-media works that investigate the relationship between architecture, memory, and urban transformation. Drawing inspiration from the rapidly evolving cityscape of Singapore, she constructs layered compositions that blur the boundaries between observation, recollection, and imagination.
Created in 2012, Living Quarters assembles fragments of architectural forms into a dense, almost cartographic composition. Through collage and delicate passages of ink and colour, buildings appear to emerge and dissolve simultaneously, reflecting the continual cycle of construction, habitation, and renewal that characterises contemporary urban life.
Rather than depicting a specific location, Hong explores the emotional resonance of the built environment. The work invites viewers to consider architecture not merely as physical structure but as a repository of personal histories and collective memory, positioning Living Quarters as a thoughtful meditation on the complexities of modern city living.
