The Rhythm of the Tropics
Swiss-born painter Theo Meier (1908–1982) found his greatest artistic inspiration in Southeast Asia, particularly Bali, where he settled and immersed himself in the island’s distinctive artistic and spiritual traditions. Closely associated with generations of Balinese artists, Meier became celebrated for vibrant landscapes that bridge European Expressionism with the unique atmosphere of Indonesia.
A Balinese Village reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with Bali’s lush tropical environment. Dense trees frame the composition while fragmented passages of colour and expressive brushwork dissolve the landscape into rhythmic patterns of light and shadow.
