I Made Wianta (1949–2020) was a pioneering Indonesian artist whose practice bridged the realms of modern and contemporary art. Born in Bali and educated in Yogyakarta, Wianta developed a unique visual language that combined Balinese cultural symbolism with modern abstraction and universal artistic ideas. His body of work reflects deep intellectual curiosity and a constant dialogue between tradition and modernity.
Fertility Trees belong to Wianta’s formative Karangasem period, which marked the beginning of his artistic journey. During this phase, he explored his subconscious and its connection to the spiritual essence of Balinese culture, a realm he referred to as Niskala, the invisible and abstract dimension of existence. Created while living in Karangasem with his wife, these works emerged from an environment rich in mysticism and natural vitality. The tranquil yet charged atmosphere of Karangasem inspired Wianta to express surreal and spiritual imagery, where the unseen life force that animates all beings finds visual form through his poetic imagination.
